DISABLED people who are registered with the Welfare Department are eligible to obtain free parking stickers from the Klang Municipal Council (MPK).

MPK Corporate Communication director Norfiza Mahfiz said the stickers were readily available at the department.

Besides filing up application forms, Norfiza said the applicants were required to produce their registration card from the Welfare Department.

“Upon approval, we will provide them with the car stickers and a tag for them to hang in their vehicles so that other motorists are aware of their disability,” she said, adding that the sticker would entitle them to park at the designated parking bays without charges.

Norfiza advised those without the card to register themselves at the Welfare Department so that they would be entitled to free parking stickers.

Flashback: As reported in StarMetro on Feb 12.

She was commenting on the StarMetro’s report dated Feb 12 under the heading “Council tows away disabled senior citizen’s car.

It was reported that a 65-year-old polio victim and his family were subjected to a three hour ordeal after his car, which was parked in a bay for the disabled, was towed by the Klang Municipal Council’s (MPK) Enforcement unit.

Retired accounts assistant R. Sandrakasan, who was driven to a bank in Jalan Kapar in Klang by his son, was in the bank with his son and wife when the incident took place.

His son rushed out of the bank after seeing his car being towed and explained his situation to the enforcement officers.

It was reported that Ruben incurred RM200 in fine and towing charges before getting back his car.

MPK enforcement chief Andry Arman said it was wrong for motorists to park in the designated bay for the disabled without the sticker.

“This is a clear offence and the offender must pay the fine,” he said when contacted by StarMetro.

Meanwhile Pet Positive president Anthony Thanasayan, who is disabled, expressed his sympathy with Sandrakasan said the council lacked diplomacy in handling the situation.

While applauding the council’s enforcement team for carrying out its duties, Thanasayan said, the council should have helped Sandrakasan register with the Welfare Department so that he could be offered the sticker immediately.

He said it was the council’s social responsibility to assist disabled people to obtain the card from the Welfare Department.

“The council must be friendly with the disabled and engage staff to help them out,” he said

At the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Thanayasan who is also a former MBPJ councillor said, a staff member had been deployed to handle social welfare cases.

“Likewise, the Klang council should also have someone to assist the disabled,’’ he said.
