KAJANG: A restaurant owner and his nephew have been arrested by the police after a video of them physically abusing their workers went viral on social media.
Kajang OCPD ACP Othman Nanyan said both were arrested on Tuesday evening.
“One of the suspects was arrested on Tuesday at around 6.55pm at his house whereas the other suspect in the video was arrested when he surrendered himself to police at the Kajang police headquarters at around 8.30pm the same day,” said Othman.
“Both the suspects have no criminal record and will be remanded for four days beginning today (today). Investigations into the incident are still ongoing,” he added.
The seven-minute-long video shows the scene in the kitchen of the restaurant in Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang, where the owner is seen mostly yelling and slapping one of the workers while his nephew punches, pushes and slaps several employees.
“They (the workers) had been physically abused before but they had not made a police report about it until now when the video was making rounds on social media,” he said.
“They were beaten because they allegedly did not follow their bosses’ orders while working,” he added.
Othman added that the one man who was repeatedly hit in the video had received treatment at the Kajang hospital and there was no serious injury detected on him.
The case is being investigated under Section 323/506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
